I have set up a OU with a number of workstations and have
set the group policy to have Windows Automatic Update to
auto update and schedule installation. However, it seems
that when I log on as a non-admin user, the policy does
not work. If I log on as an admin, it works. Am I
missing something? Why can't the workstation just run the
policy no matter what type of user is logged in?

Hi Jeff,

I am having the same problem too. I have an SUS server and
a GPO for a OU to have all updates point to our SUS but
nothing happens. I want the ablity like how the SUS server
should work with a GPO that the computer will update
itslef on the entire domain. What permissions on the GPO
to I have to apply to get it to work? Any help for Jeff
and I will be appreciated. Thanks.

Vic

What i have setup here on my dc are security groups for
all users.

Now, make the security grp of your users local admins..
What os are u using?

The OS for the server is Win2000 Server (Active
Directory); the end user workstations are Win2000 Pro.

Does the user have to be a local admin in order for the
Group Policy for Windows Automatic Update to actually work?

I had the same policy set up and it was working for non-admin users, so "no"
is the answer to your question. i actually had the opposite problem in that
non-local admin users would have the policy applied invisibly whereas local
admins would have the updates downloaded but they would then have to elect
to install them, so go figure!

is the policy being pushed out (ie are the Windows Update settings on the
workstation reflecting the GPO) at all and just being ignored? are there
any other settings in the GPO (eg Internet Explorer title bar text) that are
being pushed out. I'm trying to figure out whether it's just this setting
that isn't being applied when non-admin users log on, or whether the entire
GPO is being ignored.
