Is there a way to use GPO to further control IE? I need to be able to
disable the install of active x controls and set up the security zones for
certain behaviors but can't find the entries in GPO. Is this possible or
will I have to go the IEAK route and redeploy.

It's there.
Have not tried this before but I think it should work.

User Configuration\Windows Settings\Internet Explorer
Maintenance\Security\Security Zones and Content Ratings

In the 'Security Zones and Privacy' settings, select 'Import the current...'
and click the 'Modify Settings' to customize the required settings.
