i am the only user on my laptop, i turned it on this morning as usual and it
took me to the page where i have to enter my password. Upon entering the
correct password, all was looking rosey until the following error appeared:

"Group Policy Client service failed logon

Access Denied."

after this appeared, it logged me off and took me back to the page for me to
enter the password again. i tried again and again but i keep getting the same
error.

is this a common issue? how can i get past this?

Had the exact same issue.

Logged on in Safe Mode (without networking).
Removed the password for my user account.
Uninstalled Zonalebs Security Suite (which is generally giving me a
lot of performance issues ... will most likely change to NOD32 or the
free Avast!).
Rebooted.

Problem solved!!!

Later I reinstated the logon password for my user account.

Hope it works for you as well...

I'm the only user on my laptop and when I try to log on in safe mode I can't because the same problem still occurs. Does anyone know how to log on somehow?

This fix did not work for me. I need to get into my account and I am locked
out. My system did a restore after a reboot and not I am locked out with the
message "The Group Policy Client Failed The Logon--Access Denied" I need to
use my machine--Please don't tell me I have to wipe everything out and start
over---I'm ready to go back to XP or Apple!
