I upgraded hard drive & installed Win XP and Microsoft
Ofiice 2000. When I go to open a file in Word, Excel, or
Power Point, the tower makes a loud grinding noise?

Hi! Sounds like your hard drive may be sick. A hard drive's dying is not
so much a matter of "if," but when. Make sure you don't have any CD in the
Rom drives to rule that out. The largest culprits of noise are probably as
follows: Cooling Fan(s), CD-rom, then dying hard drive. You mention you
hear this when accessing an (office) file. What you may be hearing is
simply the drive platter begin to spin in an effort to locate the proper
drive. But, grinding noise is more indicative of HD going down. Backup any
data you may have to another HD or CDs.

I expect that is your floppy disk drive grinding. It is grinding because
one of your recent documents was on the floppy drive.
