Grinding noise from PC + cursor disappears.

When I first switch my PC on, it makes a grinding noise. After a while this
noise stops.

Also, the mouse cursor dissappears occasionally. Sometimes it goes
altogether. The PC isn't frozen and I can shut it down using the Window Key
and U. Sometimes, when the cursor disappears, the symbol for the flash drive
appears briefly in the system tray (icon with green arrow) even though I've
unplugged the flashdrive cable from the USB hub.

Any idea what any of this might be?

More than likely the fan in your power supply, or possibly a CPU or case
fan.

Now is when you should be worried. The fan may be stalled completely. You
computer is now subject to overheating, possibly leading to symptoms like:

Open the case on your computer. Turn it on and determine which fan is
causing the noise. If the fan stops turning when the noise stops turn off
your PC and use it no further until you can resolve the issue. You may be
causing damage. You may have already.
Remove the fan. Take it to a computer store which services PCs and they will
find a match. Don't waste their time or yours by going in without the bad
fan in your hand, PSU fans TEND to be fairly standard but CPU fans are all
over the place. Even the PSU fan may not be standard if you're unfortunate
enough to own an HP or Compac, but thats another topic.
If you can't get it replaced, try peeling the label off the centre, blow out
the dust, and place a small drop of oil in the bearing. Clean around the
edges and replce the label. This will sometimes buy you a little time. If
you do this, be sure to check often that the fan is actually turning.

If it turns out you need a new CPU fan, check www.newegg.com because
they may have heatsinks with fans for far less than what local places
charge for fans alone.

Yeah, but that's probalby why (there might be) a failing
fan, because junk fans are used far too often. Like many
parts, name-brand (major fan manufacturer, not relabeler's)
name on the label is an assurance of quality.

That's the reason I'm so proud of my Yugo fans! ;-)

Thank you so much everyone. That sounds like a relatively simple problem
which even I may be able to manage to repair.
