Greyed out Split function

Very often, after having made several splits editing the timeline, the Split
function becomes greyed out and will not work. I have not been able to
determine what I might have done to cause that to happen. I am able to
continue by saving the project, then closing it out. The Split does work
after reloading. Can you tell me what caused it in the first place and how I
might avoid it? Thanks.

=============================
It should be active when the project on
the timeline / storyboard is playing.

John- Thanks for your reply. I have been working my brain overtime trying to
work out my problem. All of a sudden it dawned on me that the only time that
the split is disabled is right after I have copied and pasted a segment of
the timeline audio to the Audio/Music track. What am I doing wrong?

======================
Split should be active if the current segment
is selected on the timeline. Try dragging
your Playback Indicator to a different position
and see if it makes a difference.

John: Thanks again for your reply. This makes no sense to me, but I have
determined that after copying and pasting the selected segment down to the
Audio/Music line the split becomes active on the entire timeline after I mute
the original selection. Whew!
