Greyed out References Tab

I opened a Word document from a previous version (Word 2003 or 2004) in Word
2007 (compatability mode). It has footnotes. I can view the footnotes, but
I can't edit them. (I created the original document, so I know the footnotes
are editable.) The References tab is greyed out, and won't let me do anything
with these notes.

If you are saying that the References tab is greyed out for this document
only, I would suspect some sort of corruption. Have you tried saving in HTML
format?
