too good to be true sounds about right for the comment you
quoted, but it's still an interesting idea...
basically the concept is to put internet facing apps in a
sandbox to help protect your system from threats that come
in through those apps... unfortunately right now it only
supports internet exploder, err, explorer... i understand
they're planning an update to support firefox later this
year and there are plans to support instant messaging
clients too...
unfortunately it's very much app specific and there are
always going to be internet facing apps it doesn't support
- can't really see it adding support for every p2p app out
there, there's just too many of them... im is an issue too,
which im client, which protocol - again, there are many...
also, there are some net annoyances and threats that it
cannot possibly do anything about... it's probably
effective at preventing bad code from running (within it's
scope of control) but i don't see it doing anything about
keeping the user from revealing information s/he shouldn't
reveal...
it's not a panacea, and it's not install and forget... it
does try to cover all the bases (even protecting you from
files you download while in the sandbox) but here's the
catch-22 of that situation - either the users then no
longer has to make smart decisions about what they're doing
online and so becomes completely reliant on green border to
continue functioning properly (therefore having to make
sure to monitor it's status), or more intelligently the
users still take all the precautions they did before they
installed green border and let green border help catch what
slips through the cracks in their previous safe hex
regimen... either way, it's not install and forget...
that said, i'm very interested in seeing it operate... i've
already downloaded it and gotten the free one year license
they were sending to the first 10,000 people, but i don't
want to switch browsers just to try it out so i'm waiting
for the upgrade...
