green triangle showing on video player(any)

I've been watching video on my computer for months and now for the past 3
days I always get a green triangle that cuts my viewer display in half even
stuff that i recorded myself using a dvd cam.( it's not copy protected)
how do I check for codec and how do I know wich one is right or wrong for my
setup.
