When I saw some software descriptions I've started to think
about freeware-only computer from this moment on..
How about a free(ware) OS then? ;)
P.S. only thing I'm concerned about is CD/DVD burning and how well it goes
in those free apps, and DVD playback, though that is feasible through WMP..
No problem ...

Ciao,
Bernd

Here is one nice piece of software I haven't seen anywhere on this group or
pricelessware :) Called ConText, and can be found here:

http://www.context.cx/

It has quite broad support of different highliters, a lot of options etc
etc.. I simply use it as a free replacement for Notepad, but it's still grat
util. Check it out!

Btw, I have came across pricelessware when I was searching for last version
of RegCleaner, and than came to the group.. I'm quite fascinated with what I
see here (and on the site). Keep it up people, this is simply great! When I
saw some software descriptions I've started to think about freeware-only
computer from this moment on..

Well, it's more of a gaming problem :) and my computer wouldn't welcome
overhead introduced by extra emulators and similar software offering win32
compatibility on non-win platforms :) Otherwise I wouldn't mind it at all,
specialy with progress that such OSes made in alst few years :)
WMP..
No problem ...

Ok, thanks, this encurages me even more :) Tomorrow I?ll make a clean
install of Os, and try to leave with free soft only (well except OS itself
:) )

P.S. While we're at it.. What's best alternative to MS Office applications,
primary excel & word? Nothing fancy, just that it supports xls/doc formats
without problems and too much of incompatibility (with simple documents that
have only few tables and txt formatting). Should I go after OpenOffice or
individual apps? I'd welcome thoughts of people from this group :)

Yeah, I got a quick look at OpenOffice in the meantime. Looks like support
for xls/doc is fine enough, even for equations (though their equation editor
is pretty weird, *wonders about free Eyuation editors for OO*). Ppt support
is welcome as well, and seems to work fine as well, even though I rarely use
it. So I think I'll stick with it..

And thanks to you, and everyone else (jo) for suggestions, you people are
really fast :) I'll go now, leave you to work, while I play with my new
"toys" :)

I recommend your getting OpenOffice.

Opposite of MSO, it doesn't spew its libraries all over the place. And
its registry entries are ratio some < one hundredth a percent of that
other entity. So, other than a little disk space, it's no commitment,
no real system change, to do an installation.

Then go get some standalone programs, too. :)

You can decide, according to project, when the OO word processor is needed,
or when a smaller RTF editor (some of them do basic .doc) will work.

On the Excel replacement. I am not very familiar with freeware spreadsheet
choices, have only the general guess that you might do best using the one
provided by OO; but that's something you, or others, will be able to better
determine.

Just one quick mention, related to Excel replacement. Not spreadsheet,
but for projects where a flat database suits needs, where you are working
with delimited files, I recommend looking into CSVed. It has a strong set
of processing abilities.

ABIWord is a decent stand-alone word processor, but there is no stand-alone
spreadsheet or database programs I know of.

I think you will like OpenOffice.org. I've never really found it wanting,
and I'm pretty demanding on office apps. Just be careful to get the last
stable version. Don't bother with the newest "preview" version, as it
doesn't work so great. Not yet anyway.

I have been checking out a free spreadsheet lately.

www.abykus.com

As I do not normally use spreadsheets, I don't know how well it works in
relation to others.
