Graphics weirdness in windows

I have a strange problem: When i have many windows open (and
especially when they have many sub-elements like when I "open" a table
for editing in SQL Management Studio) I get weirdness in my graphics.
Icons get cut off at the halfway mark or are missing entirely. Content
goes missing in a window until I scroll it off the screen and back and
similar weird stuff.

When I change apps during the weirdness, the UI takes a very long time
to update and things tend to move slowly. Closing the apps doesnt seem
to help. I have to reboot to get my system back to normal.

I have had it on multiple computers with totally different hardware. I
don't use any strange proprietary software but I tend to have many
windows open (my start bar often scrolls vertically because all the
items don't fit).

I am wondering if a more powerful video card will help (I tend to get
cheap video cards) and, if so, if you have any recommendations for me
in terms of what to get. If not, any ideas as to what it might be and
how to fix it?

Hi Bob,

This may sound like a really straight forward answer so I apologize but have
you checked if there are any updated video drivers for your card.

I've seen instances where i've allowed Windows to install the stock driver
and them experienced problems like this which have gone away when I updated
with the driver from the vendor.

Worth a look.

Jon

As I said above, this has happened over the years with at least
several different computers with totally different hardware (and
therefore, obviously, different drivers).

That being said, the answer to your question is "yes, I have updated
the drivers MANY MANY times in the vain hope that it would improve my
situation."

Or even if there isn't an update, re-download and install the driver
anyway. Sometimes corruption happens.

RAM is also a possibility. Since you have to load up memory for it to
happen, start with the farthest bank of RAM. Memtest is a good diag
tool to test RAM. It's easier than swapping out RAM sticks.

I assume you are not getting pagefile error messages?

Oops; shoulda read ahead. In that case, it sounds like you have some
rogue or poorly designed application you're using. There has to be a
commonality.
