A recent reinstall of Windows XP Home was done on this computer recently. The HD was cleaned first with a program provided by Dell. After a reinstall, unfortunately done by another, with a BIOS flash and flash back to the origional BIOS, a few new symptoms appeared. Seemingly when different apps launch, some are .exe files, the following symptoms appear at different times, but not always and not necessarily together:
1. Windows that are moved leave a trail of white ghost boxes behind them.
2. Programs become unresponsive and cannot be shut down in Windows Task Manager. In fact some "try" to shut down, but don't.
3. The desktop resolution reverts to 640x480, usually accompanied by partial window images remaining on the screen even when that window is closed. These windows can show up in another account if accounts are switched. The resolution can be reset by Display but the partial images remain. Also, the computer usually has to be switched off from the power switch, but NOT always. Sometimes the account will close using the START menu...often the accounts list screen has it's resolution altered and only shows part of the screen without scrolling.
4. Rebooting resets everything to normal.
5. The latest NVIDIA drivers do not help this problem.
6. There is hesitation apparent, jerky movement, during game movement in a first person shooter, and at other times but less noticable.
7. These problems are new since the install and showed with both BIOS versions.
So,
1. Is this Windows Explorer related?
2. Is this a result of the BIOS being flashed to a newer version with changes that did not revert when the earlier BIOS was reflashed?
3. Is it a symptom of a bad XP install....the updates were installed after reinstall?
4. Does anyone have an idea? I'm sure this must be a classic symptom to some guru out there. To bad M$ HELP, doesn't. It is amazing how many key words given in error messages don't show up on HELP Index list.
Thanks,
Yamaraion
