All of a sudden, Google Earth and an architectural program won't open, or
at least no visible window opens. When I try to turn off the computer, a
small window tells me the program is open and wants me to wait while it shuts
down. I guess this is a video problems, but I'm not really sure. Both
programs opened and ran okay in the past. The OS is XP SP2 w/750 MB RAM; a
look inside the tower tells me the graphics stuff appears to be built into
the motherboard, not a separate card.

Try installing the latest graphics drivers - should be available at the
motherboard manufacturer's web site.

There is a conflict. The dialog you receive awaiting the program to
end will have an "End now" option. At the top of that dialog it will
list what it is that windows is waiting to end.
It has nothing to do with your graphics adapter
Try this:
Reproduce the problem by trying to open the two that are the issue.
Then hold down keys: Ctrl+Alt+Del (All on lower row of keyboard)
Windows Task Manager will appear (You may have to wait for it)
Click the "Applications" tab
Listed will be running applications
Look for any that are listed as: "Not Responding"
Make a note of the "not responding" application
Then click on it so as to Highlight it
Then click the "End Task" button.
Close Task Manager
Now try opening the two you were having issues with.
Post back with what you found in task manager.
