I have a Toshiba A100 notebook with NVidia GeForce Go 7300, Windows XP SP3

Have just bought a Viewsonic wide screen monitor VA1928wm.

I keep getting a message to set the display at resolution 1440X900 for best
results. However I can't get the computer to accept this - says it's out of
range. According to Driver Detective The driver is up to date.

The display is not real clear so really need to resolve this

Any suggestions?

Your video chipset supports 1400 X 900 resolution. However, it will not
allow any setting that your MONITOR does not support. That's because older
monitors could be damaged by choosing the wrong settings. Yes, your monitor
supports 1400 X 900, but Windows does not know that. You need to update the
driver for the *monitor*. If Driver Detective says that the monitor driver
is up to date, then Driver Detective lied. -Dave

I think because you're notebook only has a vga (analog) connector you
will only be able to use the 1280x800 maximum resolution of the notebook,
it only recognizes CRT resolutions. If your notebook had a DVI (digital)
connector you would have been able to set the 1440x900 which is the
optimal resolution for your monitor.
