Hi all

I'm thinking about getting a A7N266-VM, but have a few questions about it
first:

1) It says it has a built-in GeForce2 chip - but which one? I'm guessing an
MX chip, but does anyone know for sure?

2) It's MicroATX. Shoulf I have any problems putting it in a normal ATX case
(this one to be specific: http://www.codegengroup.com/proddetail.asp?id=146)

3) I believe it would no problem to put in an Asus V7700 GF2 GTS card, is
that correct?

4) Anything else I should be aware of with this motherboard?

TIA for any help.

Is based on the MX yes, but have lower clockfrq. and of course slower
performance because it uses the system memory instead of dedicted
faster memory. Don't remember now for sure, but performance I belive
is under the MX200. Not directly comparable to the MX200 or MX/MX400.

No. Most ATX-cases have the holes required for mounting a mATX-board
-- some of the holes are the same as for a ATX-board.

Should be ok.

and your V7700 will be smokin fast compared to the onboard graphics on that
board. You might as well just buy a KT400 board or new NForce2 board and use
it on that, overall performance will be better. If it's a price issue, the
A7N8X-X is about $10 more around here and the A7V8-X is about $10 cheaper
than what you are planning to buy:-)

Well, A7N266-VM is seriously cheap right now here in Denmark - the price is
about $57. The A7N8X-X is about 40% more expensive ($102) and I can't find
the A7V8-X. I found an A7V8X-X though, at a price of $78.

The A7N266 ha the nForce220D chipset
The A7N8X-X has the nForce2 SSP chipset
The A7V8X-X has the KT400 chipset

Based on the price the A7N8X-X is not interesting (it is, after all, only
for a Palomino 2000+ CPU).

The KT400 chipset is for CPUs with a 400FSB right? Would i gain anything
over a KT266 based board when my CPU doesn't support more than 266FSB?
Because he A7V266 might also be interesting if the chipset is faster than
nForce220D chipset (but is it? I don't much about the different nForce
chipsets).

Re: I can't find the A7V8-X. I found an A7V8X-X though, at a price of $78.
It was a typo, you found the right board..oops sorry

Big difference in prices where you are.
In CDN$, here are our local prices
A7N266-VM $112
A7N8X-X $123
A7V8X-X $95

I was orignally running an 1800 on my KT400 board (Gigabyte GA-7VAX, which
by the way has none of the spooky problems some recent Asus boards have with
memory etc, it costs $115 here) when I first got it, waiting for the Bartons
to arrive and drop to a sensible price, which they did in May and it was a
big step up from my AMD 761 board, much faster and smoother overall
performance. I mainly got it for USB2.0 as I was buying an external cdrw
with that interface. You can run basically any socket 462 cpu from Duron
600@200FSB to Athlon3200@400FSB on these boards with the corresponding
memory either DDR1600/2100/2700/3200 or higher frequency memory like 3500 if
you want to do serious overclocking. I don't bother with that too often as I
find my system fast enough as it is. I may try with this one as the Barton I
have should do 2200 easily from what I've been told. With a KT400 or NForce2
you get a board that you can upgrade and continue to run for a year or two
with good results as the other components get cheaper over time. After 6
months...well it's all obsolete by then anyways. KT600's are out now too. In
my honest opinion, I'd spend the extra $20 on the A7V8X-X and get the newer
setup, I think it would be well spent:-)
Mark
ps- the A7N266-VM is probably so cheap because they are clearing it out, I
would guess it is about to be discontinued.
