Hi,

Normally I'm good with computers but when it comes to graphics cards I haven't a clue. I have an Advent 5411 http://support.thetechguys.com/layout.aspx?ID={a635ba21-88f5-4de2-bc86-934c2f576667}&CatID={ab954057-265e-4d0a-9b89-2f58a94398e2} and http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/laptop/5411.htm and was wondering whether it would be possible to insert a dedicated graphics card. I gather these go on a PCI(-e) slot but the problem is I don't know if I have a slot available and what type of slot it is.

I would open the case but it just doesn't budge so would rather find out without the risk of snapping it. :D

I've run analysis software etc. but when I don't know what I'm looking for it's a fruitless act.

I know there's little information here but if you need more then just ask for it and I'll try to get it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

You are unable to upgrade the Graphics card in a laptop I'm afraid.

You are correct though the newer Graphics cards would go in the PCIE slot on a desktop computer.

BTW: Welcome to PC Review.

Hi JB, Welcome to the Forum

As Wiz has already mentioned. There is a limited amount of Hardware that you can actually upgrade on a Laptop, unfortunatly Graphics is one of them.

Erm sorry to correct both of you, but you can upgrade your graphics card on a laptop. But if you are wanting to do it, i'd suggest taking it to somebody that does this for a living. As opening laptops is not the easiest thing to do...
Anyway, have a look at [/i

Can you "upgrade" to a dedicated card if you have an integrated one on your motherboard though?

Those who say you can simply say you go into BIOS and turn the integrated one off before installing the proper one. Those who say you can't simply say it can't be done at all.

Yeah sorry about that, tried editing it but internet only works when it wants to.

I'll have a look at that now, cheers.

welcome to PCR

The graphics "card" is, I believe, hard-wired onto the main board on your Advent ... no need to look for a replacement card, you'll need a new laptop.

Some laptops do have a real "card" that can be replaced with a better/newer card, but, there are 90% more that you cannot. It will still be PPP.

So not possible then? Oh well, it was a nice thought while it lasted.

Knew I should've just looked for one with a good card and then upgrade the RAM etc

Thanks anyways.

On some laptops like ASUS, Sony Viao, Mac you can upgrade the graphics. I have heard that ASUS are even making space for a secnd hard drive. How true I don't know.
Back to your laptop though. Advent is made by DSG International, who make laptops/desktops for Curry's, Dixons, PC World. They are very cheaply made and don't have place for expansion....

Sono you can't upgrade yours...

Here are a few links to look at for external graphics cards for laptops, although they are used with monitors other than your LAptop one....

Those are just a few..If that is something you might ;look at, i'd suggest ASUS, they have been at it the longest and probably have a better product...I did post on another thread about ASUS, but can't seem to find it..
