Hi guys, i know youve all prbably heard this a million time but i was wondering if you could help. I need to get a replacment for my GeForce 6800GT AGP card cos my old one has blown, and ive been told by my computer maker that that the AGP 6800GT is no longer made so i have to choose another one.

Now they are offering me a X800XL, now ive heard that this is a good card but its not as good as the 6800GT is it? am i being fobbed off?? or is this a fair deal? Are the benchmarks similar? (does anyone know a good benchmark website, im fed up of trawling through google)

What should i expect to be paying to replace this card?

Hope you can help.

Thanks alot.

Rich

it seems as though the cards are getting harder to get hold of as most places aren't selling them anymore, the X800XL is an amazing card for its price and performs slightly better than the 6800GT, you're looking at about £210 for an X800XL

depends really mate ... they are both have there advantages and disadvantages in games, the 6800GT has Shader model 3 and the x800xl has SM2 ... this isnt that big a deal although in some games u can tell SM3 is an advantage, they both perform different in different types of games. I believe nvidia cards run better in games like half life 2 and far cry and ATI in games like doom3 ... i think .. this is off the top of my head :p

I myself have a 6800gt and i love it :p so really up to you if you like your old one i would recomend to get one again :) .. try the internet for it :)

Ya got that the wrong way round. Nvidia kill Ati in games like Doom 3 but Ati have a slight lead in Half Life 2 ;).

The X800XL and the 6800GT are virtually the same though, i doubt you would see any in game differences to be honest.

I would say the x800xl is more powerfull, whereas the 6800gt is more capable. If that makes any sense.

Personally, 4 out of 5 of the last games I got use SM3. Some, like Far Cry, just look a little better. Others, such as Doom3, have effectively built the entire graphics engine around it. Others, such as Splinter Cell Chaos theory, make SM3 an intrinsic part of the gameplay that is essential for stealth and atmosphere.

So it varies. As far as benchmarks are concerned, yeah a x800xl will probably beat a 6800gt - but thats only in games where a substancial graphical effect is unavailable. Considering the new generation of consoles all support SM3, its going to be a big part of games in the future. I think this is why ATI were in such a hurry to release the x1800 line.

That being said, get em' to throw in a stick of RAM or a chunky cooling fan (for overclocking it) and the x800xl would probably be better.

( if you still play ofcourse :) )

I was asking that exact same question a couple of threads ago about shader model 3 - 6800gt vs x800xl

if Rich used to have a SM3 card he will probably notice the difference if he went from a 6800GT to a x800xl ... so my recomendation ... stick with the 6800GT mate :)

It looks as though another 6800GT isn't an option as this card is coming from the supplier that made his computer.

They don't have any more 6800GT's in AGP flavour.

The card they're offering is as good as the 6800GT, bar all the nit picking, so I'd go for it, seems a fair replacement to me.
