Graph goes blank during Access design process

In more than one database, a graph on a form displays completely blank after
some design change elsewhere. On double clicking the graph, the table of data
is found to be correct, and yet the graph does not show anything. The best
way of getting it going again is to change the graph to 'by columns' instead
of 'by rows', then change it back. An error message says that only 255
columns are allowed (I have 3000 rows), so afterwards I have to reset the
X-axis scale properties to what they were. What is happening?

Sorry, it was the other way about - I change to 'rows' then back to
'columns'. To further define the problem, I am using an X-Y scatter graph, on
Access97 and Graph97. The graph is in an unlinked object box.
