Just got a new computer with XP and I'm lost. Having
trouble restoring back ups I did with Win 98. One
solution according to the software manual for Family Tree
is that backups have to be on one floppy (mine are on two)

On XP how can I put the two floppy in a dir on my hard
drive...can't seem to find out how. Thanks, Grandma

XP's backup program is incompatible with backups created on earlier versions
of Windows. You can either restore it on your previous computer and copy
the files to the new or you can try using this trial version of Backup MyPC
which has been compatible up to now:

Do you have a floppy drive on your new PC? I assume you are asking about
your own personal file backups and not a system backup. If you have the
drive, just insert the disk and copy to file on your PC. If you don't have
the drive, find someone who has a CD writer and will copy them for you.

Hi Grandma, not sure about the one floppy deal for
backups. Try coping the data on the two floppy's to a
cd-rw. See if that works....good luck....

Grandma,

If the files on floppy one are separate from those on floppy two - ie.
not a part of a spanned set, try this:

1) Click on Start | All Programs | Accessories | Windows Explorer
Click on My Computer and then C:\

2) From the menu, select File | New Folder and name the "New Folder"
in the right hand pane whatever you desire.

3) Place floppy one in the floppy drive
Click on 3 1/2 floppy icon and from the menu bar select Edit | Select
All, and from the menu bar select Edit | Copy

4) Click on the New folder created earlier, right click and select
Paste

Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the second floppy.

Which Family Tree Program are you using?

Is it "Family Tree maker" from Genealogy.com? If it is the help system for
that program has some instructions but they might be a bit tricky to follow.
See below. Essentially you start with the first floppy disc and the program
will prompt you to insert the next one when it needs it....

To open a backup copy of your Family File:

1. From the File menu, select Restore From Backup (ALT, F, S).
2. In the Look in lists, select the drive and folder where the file you want
to open is located and then select the file name. If you are unsure where
your file is, click Find file and follow the instructions in Finding files.
3. Click Restore.
4. In the Save in list, select the drive and folder where you installed
Family Tree Maker. Usually this is the FTW folder on drive C.

5. You must give your file a new name so that Family Tree Maker can make a
copy of your original file and then convert the copy to a Family Tree Maker
for Windows file. Click Save to accept the name that Family Tree Maker
suggests, or type a new name in the File name field and then click Save.

The file name can be any valid Windows file name, up to 255 characters,
although it must have the extension .FTW. If you do not type in the .FTW
extension, Family Tree Maker will add it for you.
Family Tree Maker begins restoring your file. If you are restoring a file
from diskettes, Family Tree Maker will prompt you to insert the diskettes as
needed.

Note: The Genealogy.com Online Help Center is a resource for answers to
technical or customer service-related questions - 24 hours a day. Here you'
ll find easy to understand articles, tips, step-by-step instructions and
tools for using Family Tree Maker. From the Internet menu, select Technical
Support, or point your browser to www.genealogy.com/help.
