Hello,

I was configuring a policy setting (as the result of
reading a knowledge base article; 216463, step 4) and the
directions state to create a new policy from the group
policy tab.

However, the exact same setting can be manipulated by
clicking "edit" instead of "new".

So my question is, what is the preferred technique for
implementing a change to a group policy? By creating a
GPO for every setting (and thus potentially having dozens
of objects floating around) or just changing the settings
of the pre-existing object?

Thanks,

Hello Chris!

Thanks for writing!

A group policy is a collection of settings to help define rights,
environment, etc.....
It is not suggestion to have a different policy for each and every setting
that you create, however, you may want to combine certiain settings into a
single policy for administration purposes.

For example, if you were to create a policy that defined the desktop setting
for the users in your domain, you would not want to highlight the default
domain policy, click "edit" and put the setting in there, although that is
possible. Instead, you would want to click "NEW" and create a new policy
such as "DESKTOP SETTINGS POLICY" and define all of your desktop setting in
that policy.

I think you are on the right track as you already were suspicious of having
multiple policies, one for each item.

Hope this helps!
