I'm somewhat new to AD, so forgive me if this seems a dumb question.
Also, sorry for the long post, but I always see requests for details
when people post questions to Usenet, so here they are up front.
We have a win2k AD Domain. I have a test OU I've created and put a
win2k server test system in that OU, as well as a WinXP Pro system. I
created a GPO on that OU, following generally the directions I found
here:
http://www.microsoft.com/seminar/shared/asp/view.asp?url=/seminar/en/20021101TNT1-62d6/manifest.xml
-- What I've done:
To summarize that URL, On the Win2k DC, I right clicked on the test OU
and selected the Group Policy tab.
Then I clicked New, and gave the GPO a name.
In the GP Editor, I right-clicked Administrative Templates under
Computer Configuration.
Selected Add/Remove Templates.
Browsed to the system.adm file which I got from the WinXP box. (I'd
renamed the file to system-XP.adm). Selected it. Clicked Close.
In the GP Editor, I clicked my way to Computer Configuration |
Administrative Templates | Network | DNS Client.
Enabled the Primary DNS Suffix policy and set the value to our AD
domain name (e.g. myaddomain.com). Clicked OK.
I then enabled the DNS Suffix Search List and set the value to a comma
separated list of DNS Suffixes I need our DNS Clients to use across
the whole AD domain. Clicked OK.
Close GP Editor.
Reboot both test clients.
-- Effects:
The WinXP system gets the policy and I can see the effects of it when
I run ipconfig /all (I see the new Primary DNS Suffix and the DNS
Search List I specified in the Group Policy.) The Win2k Server box
gets only the new DNS Suffix, but not the search list.
My question:
When I load a new administrative template into the GP Editor, will the
items in the newer template apply only to the systems of the same
Windows version from which the template came? Since Win2k Server
systems have a DNS Suffix Search List, why doesn't the GP Object
affect it on the Win2k Server system? Can I make this happen?
I loaded a WinXP system.adm file into the GP editor on the Win2k
domain controller
