gpedit.msc controls

I am trying to help edit a computer lab and set up restrictions for users
accessing the computers. They aren't on a domain, so users just have access
to the computers with no login. The problem is that half of the comptuers
don't have the full list of controls. Under User config, administrative
templates. there is only windows components. there is no start menu, desktop,
control panel options under the admin templates selection. Is there a setting
that was somehow selected or something. All the computers have the same
files, just half the computers don't have the full gpedit abilities. Is there
something that can be done besides a full reinstall. Thanks for any help you
can give.

Sounds like the problem computers are missing some of the policy templates.
In the Group Policy Editor, right click Administrative Templates and select
Add/Remove Templates from the menu. Under Current Policy Templates you
should see at least the following items listed; conf, inetres, system,
wmplayer, and wuau. If any are missing click on the Add button. This should
give you access to the C:\WINDOWS\Inf folder where you can select the
missing templates.

On a side note, you might want to consider using Windows SteadyState to
accomplish your goal. Take a look at this web site for more info.
