I'm working on a friends computer. Windows is not letter her update
computer. she is running vista home, 64-bit, not sure what SP is on
there. What going on is that when you click on the windows-update icon
it comes up saying error 80070424. I look online and try some trouble
shooting blogs and it's still not working. Any help will be great.

....and as I just stated you need to ask your question in the Windows Update
newsgroup with all the pertinent information. Someone there can help you.

What is the best way to get this error fix without have to reinstalling
windows? Is it a reg error or a program error? Can any one send me a
link to the best resource to fix this problem?

Hi Loran,

0x80070424 ERROR_SERVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST BITS service is deleted.

80070424 usually means that the BITS service (required by Windows Update) is
not running.

If no joy, click the Start orb, in the Start Search field type in

cmd

Right click cmd.exe and choose 'Run as administer'. Follow the prompts
to allow the Command Prompt to run.

At the prompt, type in the below and press Enter after *each* command

regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
exit

Restart the system and see if it can update now.

No joy... then

It would be a good idea to scan.

I recommend downloading and installing
MalwareBytes' Antimalware (MBAM) and
SUPERAntiSpywaÑe (SAS).

Do a full scan with MalwaÑeBytes' and
SUPERAntiSpywaÑe.

Reboot

Reboot

Both free versions of MBAM and SAS are on-demand scanners and offer no
'real-time' protection. Keep them installed and use them as
'second-opinion' scanner which is purposely (by design) recommended by
their respective authoÑs.

Try this (Snip)

Click Start, select run, type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

if that doesn't do the trick:-

Verify that BITS is correctly configured and started:

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2. Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
3. In the Startup type box, click Manual, and then click Apply.
4. Click the Log On tab, and then verify that the service is enabled in
every hardware
profile that is listed. If the service is disabled in one or more hardware
profiles, click
the hardware profile, click Enable, and then click Apply.
5. Click the General tab, and then click Start.

If that's all okay, then perhaps:-

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after the command) :-
Regsvr32 QMGR.DLL
