i just got the vista rc1 dvd in the mail and i am so excited. is a clean

Seeing you have already done a backup of your files, I would suggest a
clean install is probably the best way to go.

I've done both and while I think its better doing the clean install, I ran
the upgrade routine for RC2 5744 last night from my XP SP2 taking just over
an hour to complete and it's as stable as anything. And I didn't have to
re-install any apps so its a real time saver.

Just a point. I tried the same with beta2 and while the programs seemed to
have installed with no errors druring the upgrade, I had major problems with
several programs trying to use them or certain features. Worse yet, I was
unable to uninstall them.

I had major problems with Beta 2 upgrade routine as well. It seems a lot was
fixed since, especially with RC2.

When I did the same with 5744 most of my programs ran fine except for AVG
(it was an older non-Vista-compat. version and yes, the uninstaller would not
work with it - had to do it manually), and also MSFT's own intellipoint
software which uninstalled fine. Other than that, I think upgrading is worth
a try, especially where one has already backed everything up in case of
issues.

As someone pointed out, since you've done the backup why *not* do a
clean install?

A clean install is *always* better than an upgrade, period.

Hopefully fixed by RC1 which the OP has. Other than that I just wanted to
alert the OP to the possibility that programs may not work or features may
not work and to be prepared. It is always worth a try as you can fall back
on a clean install. Clean installing also gives a chance to leave out many
programs which are never used any more and make the new system 'a fresh
start' .
