Is there a way to group shapes (or really merge shapes) into one new shape,
that when oulined, ONLY outline the new created shape, and NOT all the
individual shapes that made up the new shape?

Bcrane,
You could however group all the shapes, then right click the group and save
as a picture. Then paste it back in.
Don't know if that is a viable workaround for you.

As Luc says there's no real way to do this as eg in many vector drawing
programs.

You might want to play with:

Masking the overlap lines with a shape drawn with the freeform tool and set
the mask to no line and either the same fill as the shapes or background fill
as appropriate. You will need to zoom in for accuracy. A bit of a PITA but it
can work.

If the merged shape you need is fairly simple you might be able to draw the
whole thing with the freeform tool or the curve tool.

Thanks for the information. I'll give some of the suggestions a try. I
wanted to be able to make something like a grid pattern (e.g. window framing
for a house), that could then be adjusted with the 3d tools, so that the
whole shape was being uniformily adjusted by the 3d alterations. So, it
wouldn't be a solid shape, but a shape with "holes" in it.

Thanks again for the suggestions.
