For the life of me, I cannot access google through
internet explorer. it comes up fine when i go in through
aol. otherwise, i receive a message saying there is a
dns error, problem with the website, etc...

Has anyone else had this? Anyone have a solution?

There is a malware/hijack/trojan on the rounds doing this.
TROJ_ISTBAR.A
which is pretty new.
I think there is another one called qhost or something too.

Information available from trendmicro site at
http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/enterprise/security_info/ve_detail.php?id=56138&VName=TROJ_IS
TBAR.A

(may not have wrapped properly - ends with istbar.a)

Run a recently updated version of AdAware (updated today).
Hopefully in a day or to the AV definitions will have noticed it.

Sita,
Sounds like "TrojanQhost" ........ however your AV should have detected
this!
Also your Firewall should have alerted you this Trojan was connecting!

Trojan Qhosts hijacks the HOSTS file, however unlike normal redirectors,
this one hides the HOSTS file in the "Windows\Help" folder.

See: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Download: either "RenHelpHostXP.bat" or RenHelpHostME.bat"
Follow up with the link provided instructions .......
