How do I stop Google from automatically installing the new version of the
toolbar?

It automatically installed it for me and now everytime I login it tries to
change the default homepage. I know this becuase I have software to notify
me of this...

How do I fix this?

Thanks alot in advance
Kind regards

Not flippant but shouldn't you ask Google? My experience is that the most PC
problems are caused by users installing downloaded software. Always ask
yourself this question before you install anything: "Do I need this so badly
that I'm willing to risk breaking my PC?" YMMV

It was installed automatically, but I don't know where it is set in order to
do this! If I knew I would have stopped the installation.

Thank you

There are no settings in the Google toolbar to prevent it from updating
automatically.

With the last round, it installed something I didn't want in my start-up, so
I dumped the toolbar altogether, and had to clean the registry to get rid of
its phone-home crap in the startup files.

My post wasn't clear. I meant that if people didn't install unnecessary
software in the first place they'd have far fewer computer problems. I
understand your dilemma though. The answer to your OP is the auto update
feature can't be turned off. Google guide states this in the following
thread:

Here's how to uninstall the Google Toolbar:

It appears from other posts that you cannot stop version 4 from
updating.
FWIW, I have version 3 and see no pressing reason to go to version 4.
Mine has never asked me to update.

s never asked me to update.

Thanks for your replies.

I've decided not uninstalled the latest version as I don't want my homepage
updated. Well it's a shame because there were some new features I was going
to use...

I just realised that I uninstalled the toolbar completely now, but, I would
like to keep the older version. Do you know where I can obtain the previous
verion 3?

I dont really like the it automatic update factility Google has. It's a
shame it doesnt have an option for update.

Thanks again.

????????????????????????????
Why do you say it (version 3) automatically updates to Version 4 when
it wants to when it doesn't for me? (and never has)

....Alan

Version 3 did update automatically to version 4 for me, but it was quite a
while after version 4 came out. I don't care for version 4 at all, and
even worse, the update apparently trashed my IE settings, including the
toolbars and add-ons. I uninstalled version 4, deleted everything I could
find that had Google in its name, including registry entries, put IE back
the way I had it, and reinstalled version 3. I also set my firewall to
forbid the Google Toolbar Installer access to the Internet. It's been 20
days since I did that and the update has not recurred, but I supect that
it may yet show up again. If so, I'll abandon it entirely. Software that
updates itself without my explicit permission is malware by definition.

It's been my experience that the toolbar updates differently for different
people, going in stages. It took quite a while for my home pc to autoupdate
to v4. Some of the computers at work were a little sooner, some later.

Kind of like Windows Update.

After you download and *save* v3 from Filehippo, go to this Google Groups
thread below and follow the info from poster 'GooogleToolbarGuerilla' about
changing the attributes of your Program Files \ Google folder. It works and
I have had no issues with it. It's his Aug 28th post.

http://groups.google.com/group/IETo...read/thread/70848ce7abe54dba/f1ade31cac3894d9

What you are essentially doing is changing the attributes of that folder and
of 'GoogleToolbar1.dll' within it to 'read only' and you are disallowing
'write' access to it. That stops the b@st@rds from Google from changing the
software on your PC without you knowledge. I agree that v3.0xx is a far
better UI and the search history is far easier to use and to clear.

Also, if you can do so, disable/remove any Google 'exe' from running. This
will stop 'GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe' from sending back to Google.

Yup, and it re-updated on my system last night. I went through the
procedure given here:
http://groups.google.com/group/IEToolbar-Group-Bugs/msg/70ad8c81edb327cf
to see if that will prevent it from updating again. One problem with this
approach is that I don't know of any way to tell whether it has tried to
update and failed.

Onw thing I did that wasn't mentioned in that post was the export the
registry entry for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google after I'd restored
the version 3 toolbar and put everthing back the way I wanted it. This
time I just had to merge the .reg file to put all of my settings back. I
plan to update that every few days while I'm waiting to see whether the
automatic update kicks in again.
