Google Talk ...

Yes Mucks, I've been using Google Talk for several months now. It is a good basic kind of IM - no long downloads, and not many "frills" (i.e., you cannot use a webcam or microphone) however, a friend and I find it is ideal for just chatting. I use Yahoo IM and also MSN, and whilst I quite enjoy some of their features, I like the un-cluttered simplicity of Google Talk. :thumb: Quite simply, it does what it says on the tin ... er, screen :D

I used it a while ago and then stopped using it. I didnt think it was that good and didnt work very well. I think other programs such as skype and other im programs do a better job.

I think you may be missing something there TC ...

Google Talk is a downloadable Windows application that enables users to quickly and easily talk or send instant messages to their friends for free. Calls are made through your computer using the latest voice technology; all you need is an Internet connection, a microphone and a speaker. If you do not have a speaker or built-in microphone, you may want to consider buying a headset, which will also provide the best voice quality when using Google Talk
... got my headset all set (I think), you got one too ?

Google says it don't support Vista, in fact, if you install the program, it gives you a little warning ... however, it installed no bother. :thumb:

you all know my email address ... :D

  Well I am definitely going daft! I hadn't seen a setting for voice chat in my Google Talk - before now!!! I've just opened it to look and you are quite correct - of course. How the heck did I ever miss that? Just having a rummage for headset - I've been moving so much stuff around in here I can't find anything  where have I put that....

PS - Yup I installed it on Vista also - and no problem here either - it's surprising what Vista will allow if one asks it nicely I think ;)

oh, you think Skype is better ... bummer, I tried that once, some time back though, thought it was a wee bit laggy. :)

What interested me more was the fact that Google say it supports other clients like GAIM in Linux. :thumb:

TC, I had to 'dust' mine off ... been sat on top of the PC for err, years. :D

I think if you just add my email address to your contacts, I should show up on your list as online.

You'll have to tell me if it is that simple, I'm just learning ... I don't play well on IM ... I take too long to type :thumb:

I don't have your Google email address. ;)

Found 'em now - in a tangle, in a box! Just been testing them out on the adjustment thingy in XP, but something isn't quite right my voice isn't being detected

XP ??

Just plug the mike into the pink (i think) socket on the back/front/side of your Vista box, and that's all you do. ;)

I don't have a mic anymore so I could do with getting a cheap headset for VOIP - I just need the other person to understand Geordie speak now ;)

I suppose it's about time I gave google talk a go :thumb:

Ian, I come from Scotland, I can act as interpreter. :p

TC & I had a great 'session' last night ... TC was on dial-up and we didn't suffer any problems whatsoever ... may have been something to do with it being the wee hours of the morning. :D

I'll definitely try and get my brother & sister in Canada to give it a try out ... it is simple to use, even for me. :thumb:

I wonder if we can use it for conferencing?

:user:

Mucks is right - could hear him very clearly, and there wasn't that awkward delay between speaking and the message being received (as there used to be with some of the other IMs I've tried previously.)

I don't think Google Talk supports conference calls just yet though, I've just had a look through "Help" and it just mentions opening multiple windows to chat, so probably just one-to-one only at present.

As for your accent Ian, are you more of a "Jimmy Nail," or a "Ruth Archer" pet? ;) :D

I've got no idea who Ruth Archer is so I'm not too sure! I'm from a place called Cramlington in Northumberland but I've been in Manchester so long now it's softened quite a bit (unless I go back home and it comes back with a vengeance for some reason!)

Sorry Ian - didn't really think you would be familiar with Ruth Archer - she is a character in the radio soap "The Archers" but her accent is adopted for the part so not sure that it is very authentic (in real-life she sounds accentless.) My personal preference is Jimmy Nail, could listen to him speaking for hours..... when not listening to Sean Connery's purr..... ooh calm-down Taffycat!!

lol, me I love Billy Conelly ;)
I'm on skype, although I've not used it for ages. Found skype worked just fine with no real lag & was able to use it quite clearly without a headset which was handy.
But I'll check out google talk & check the prices of headsets :D
Dunno if I'll understand much (took me months of nodding & smiling before I was able to actually understand what John was saying  ) But it would be so cool to talk to you guys :D:D:D
