Go go http://maps.google.com/ and click on Satellite.

It has a very high cool factor, though the images appear to be a bit
dated.

The images for my neighbourhood appear to be recent. They show the start of
the construction of a condiminium near me.

The download seems to be huge, and if you want to use it later, you have to
pay for it. Too bad.

Google just snapshotted the whole country a few weeks ago.
There was a Slashdot article about it. I looked at my
neighborhood and it looks current.

With what? They now have their own satelites? "Taking a snapshot"
probably meant that they collected what they could get at that time.

The age of the pictures depend on the area. The image of my house (in
downtown) is between two and three years old. Some big trees at our
neighborhood school that were cut down two years ago are still shown
but my house shows its new roof color.

The images near my work (30 miles away on the outskirts) are well over
three years old. A big grocery store is missing and they don't even go
all the way out to my office. They run out of images about a 1/2 mile
short.

Still... it is fun to wander around.

Google recently acquired <www.keyhole.com> which has access to satellite and
other imagery.

Looks like I'm about right then...
From the keyhole website "Keyhole continuously updates its database
with the average age of imagery ranging from 18 to 24 months. Imagery
can vary in age from as new as 2-3 months to as old as 2-3 years.
Keyhole is increasingly taking advantage of satellite imagery to update
the Keyhole database more aggressively." Thanks for the link.

No good for me. I don't live in USA.
