Google Desktop or taskbar - worth the install?

Considering how many registry keys and Hijackthis lines these programs add,
are they worth the convenience of faster searches for frequent items?
How much resident memory do they take up?

That said, anyone know why Windows Defender issues alerts when the Google
Toolbar adds registry keys?

I tried the Google desktop tingy, a while back. It took forever to
index my stuff and turned to be a lot slower than the find command.
Though it did search my computer for things I searched the web for with
Google. Not worth the trouble, in my experience.
