How did I make the change? I didn't do it knowingly. I installed google a
long time ago and I've just started receiving the messages within the past
week and have been blocking the attempts to change. What is the significance
of making the change?

It's really up to you. Google toolbar just pushed out an update, and that
is where those questions are probably coming from. Just got the same thing
today myself, and to keep Google and my default search page set the way I
had them (to Google, of course), I answered yes to all three.
