Several weeks ago, I found a Windows service on Microsoft's
site that solves a common problem that causes shutdown to
take several minutes. It worked great on the one machine
I tested it on, but I don't have access to that machine
right now and I'm now unable to locate the program. Does
anyone have a reference to it?

(There are various posts talking about how to edit the
registry, but that's not what I'm looking for.)

Thanks...

Jeff,

Use the following link to get to the microsoft download search window

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en

type "user profile hive cleanup" (without the quotes) into the search bar
(or keywords bar) and press Go

the top item in the list is what you are after (I think)

Alan

Thanks, that was it! After installing this (on another
machine), shutdown time goes from several minutes to several
seconds. I've found a lot of articles that talk about slow
shutdown issues with Windows 2000 as well as other versions
of Windows, but none of them mention this solution. Too bad
it's so hard to find this program (and too bad Microsoft didn't
wire this into Win 2000).

I set my Power Options in Control Panel to make my tower's "Power" button
shut down the PC. Then, to shut down, I just press said button, and my
Win2K box shuts down in 1-2 seconds. As a comparison, if I select "Shut
down" from the Start Menu, my Win2K box takes about 60 seconds. Weird.

One is a forced shutdown, the other is not.
