good video browsing software?

I'm looking a good program for browsing through MPEG2 video for the purpose
of capturing stills. Ideally, it would have playback with adjustable speed;
but then it would allow you to stop and move frame by frame, and then
capture a still to disk.

Windows Media Player doesn't seem to have a still capture function at all.

VirtualDub doesn't seem to handle MPEG2 video.

Irfanview chokes on the video whenever I try to load it!

I have a $ware program for this right now -- it has the adjustable speed
playback, and frame by frame movement, but the playback window is too small
for my purposes.

Just tried making a VCD <Mpg 1>still w/ IrfanView.
I just played the vid w/ IrfanView.
Stopped it to a frame I wanted.
Clicked on Image tab,Create New (empty) image.
Then right clicked for a paste.
Just crop and save.......lotta work.
I assume it will do the same w/ SVCD, if you have Mpeg 2 decompressor
on your box.
This may not have the precise still locator you need..using the
slider.
I use WinDVD for stills as it came pre-loaded...but cost otherwise.

Try VirtualDub-Mpeg2 <freeware>
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=72#comments
I tried it w/ an SVCD clip and saved the still w/ MS Paint as a Jpg
Use the copy frame command under the Video tab..
IrfanView did play SVCD on my box <XP>, BTW :)

The MPEG-2 enabled version of Virtualdub worked great - many thanks to Fred
and Buzz Light Beer.

But VirtualdubMod does and it will do what you want. When you press the
Shift key it will only show key frames, making you browse even faster.
It will even save the stills for you as BMP, TGA or PnG.
