Just wondering if anyone else uses something besides explorer.exe and if
they're happy with it. I've already switched out the file manager
portion to Directory Opus, just wondering about the shell as well ...
While I haven't replaced the shell, I've taken a sort of "half measure" by
always including the GNU Win32 utilties (
http://unxutils.sourceforge.net/ )
on every system I own. Gives me a basic working set of the UNIX/Linux tools
for Windows. All I do is download and install it to a C:\UNIX directory and
update my path. Been using it for years, comes in handy.
I've also tried the JP Software (
http://www.jpsoft.com/ ) command line
replacements in the past, 4NT and TC (Take Command, essentially the visual
version of 4NT). They originally started w/ 4DOS, and while it's no longer
supported, it's still offered FREE. Of course, I suspect 4DOS may be
inadequate for some (e.g., not sure if it supports long filenames). 4NT/TC
seems work well enough, does add some nice features like a debugger w/
breakpoints (TC), true subroutines, case statements, etc. But I'm a
cheapskate, never found anything compelling enough to dump $75 for either
(or $100 for both). But I can see where someone who makes extensive use of
the command line would find it money well spent.
