I've been looking for a good basic calculator that stays on top
I've looked , but the only one I like so far is "RS 2000"
from ... http://www.gonebowlin.com/freeware.html ...
it's pretty good , but I was wandering if there was a better
one ... if you know of a better one (for XP ) please post ... thanks ...

You didn't say what you found wanting in the standard windows
calculator (which OS?) or Eagle RS 2000.

Try showcalc

Check the entire "Scientific Calculator Suggestions" and "Best
Freeware Calculator" threads in acf from mid-September and
mid-November in the Google ng archive. This link (all on one line)
will list them.

A somewhat unusual alternative continues to grow on me. I think of
Dicom as a calculator implemented as a word processor. This requires
a concious mental "reset" to get started, but with a little practice
and planning it is very nice.

When I just want a simple expression calculator, I use features that
are part of Dave's Quick Search Deskbar (also pricelessware) or
WireKeys (at www.wiredplane.com ). Expression calculators and are
also available in several other programs.

An alternative that might work is to use a program like NailIt (
www.common.net/~cv/ ) that allow *any* program window to stay-on-top.
Such a program would allow you to select any calculator based on
features. I don't know if NailIt works on XP, but there are several
other "stay-on-top" type programs available that I've seen mentioned.

Don't post your shareware program in a freeware newsgroup !!!

Is v2.2.9 freeware?

Alexei Cioina's post was not terribly clear (and he was undoubtedly
politically incorrect), however "... and Calculator v 2.2.9 are free
software" according to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/applied_mathematics/

V2.2.9 does not have a nag -- at least for the first few times I ran
it -- nor do I see any advertisement except at the top of the quite
minimal help: "Buy most recent version from: http://www.shareit.com
Product id 186383" The Share-It description says that 2.3.1 trial has
some sort of size limitation. I was unable to find a license, but I
didn't investigate the Yahoo site further since I am not a member (or
rather I've forgotten the account/password I used).

FWIW, I scanned with AntiVir, AntiVirus, Avast!, AVG, and BitDefender.
I also may have missed something (again!) or WebWalker may have other
insight.

Is v2.2.9 freeware?

No it is not. "Shareware downloads:" The web page clearly lists it as
shareware. It may be an excellent calculator replacement for what comes
with Windows. It is not freeware nor any freeware derived variant and as
such IMO, it should not be mentioned here without a clear disclaimer.

[snip]

The software can be downloaded for free for trial purposes. Then you are
supposed to purchase it if you like it.

"This is not to say there is anything wrong with people playing 2e, 1e or
whatever else you want to play. Your money, your time, your choice of how
you have fun. Long as you do that it doesn't matter what you play."

Scientific & Currency calculator is a free
Software for version 2.2.9 only. You may use it in any educational or
commercial purposes. Other versions up 2.2.9 are Shareware Software.

But I don't get it.
You call your calculator software version 2.2.9 as shareware (as per
webpage).

hi WebWalker,
do you like the words "total free" , "extra free" "absolutely free "
and "free with donations"? :-)))

This license is more generous than most. Thanks for providing the
clarification.

I must agree with WebWalker that my initial reaction was unfavorable
since your calculator initially appeared to be commercial shareware.

As a native American English speaker, may I recommend: "Versions above
2.2.9 ...." or "Versions after 2.2.9 ....".

If you post here again, perhaps you could provide an annotated link or
further explanation in your post.

Thanks for letting us know about this calculator. It looks quite
powerful yet relatively easy to use.
