Hello people.

Does someone here knows any good, free MP3 player that isn't bloated? I don't
need visual effects or skins (like Winamp has).

This one seems very basic.

Have a look at http://www.uni-frankfurt.de/~pesch/#1by1

Weighs in at 54K.

Tired of creating and updating playlists? 1by1 is a small, fast and handy
player which is not only small: It provides powerful tools to handle your
files and listen to your tracks.

o Directory Player (needs no playlists)
o Explorer like file navigation
o Full Resume (remembers last played track and position)
o ACM (MP3) and mpglib (MP3/MP2) support
o Winamp input plugin support
o Audio dynamics and stereo enhancer
o Directory searcher (plays whole drives)
o Cue sheet support
o Playlist support
o Favorites

Looks good. The MP3 player will be used in a small audio system that will be
controlled only by VNC over a network, so nice interface isn't needed.

Will try this. Thanks!

I like XMPlayer (http://www.un4seen.com/)
Though it supports skins, I don't use it.
I find it to be more responsive (faster / nicer to operate) as winamp, while
it still can play a range of different formats: OGG / MP3 / MP2 / MP1 / WMA
/ WAV / MO3 / IT / XM / S3M / MTM / MOD / UMX audio formats, and PLS / M3U /
ASX playlists.

Just take a look.

Do any of these players mentioned allow you to mark a section of the
mp3 that's playing and have it constantly repeat? ( for when I'm
trying to listen to horn parts and score them down ).
The basic media player in windows almost has this function...though
you have to manually restart the selection.

Looping within a single MP3?
Nope, XMPlay can't and neither can CoolPlayer. But to be honest I think such
an option is (IMHO) mor an MP3 editor thing.

Ta for the info.

Yep, it's more likely to be found on an editor..but the basic windows
media player does it, and it's a very handy function for me!
Haven't yet come across another ( simple ) player that can handle
this.

Sound like you could use SoundScriber. It's a small (46KB) tool made
for transcription.

Cool! Thanks for that.

It's a little fiddly with regard to setting up the repeat section -
would have been nice to have been able to use mouse clicks on the play
line - but the speed function is a huge plus.

Interesting 'bug' on the number of repeats selection box...I wondered
if it would repeat more than 10 time..so typed in 11.
In the box that indicated the repeat loop number, it jumped from 10 to
65546!

I'll see how it performs 'in action', but I reckon it's a keeper.

(it's for a small MP3 "jukebox" I am considering to make)

It's what I'm using instead of WMP. It does have skins and visual
effects but only if you want them. Still, it loads very fast, supports
playlists and is very small. Also, I want to mention that the correct
name for the program is XMPlay

I really like 1by1 for reliability and ease of use .. but I would like to
have it support more than just .MP3 ... specifically, .WAV, .OGG,
and .MID files .. and perhaps to read a music CDROM. Is there
a source URL for downloading plug-ins for these things I ask?
People keep mentioning plug-ins, but never seem to point to an
actual download URL. Thanx lodz

It can do all that.

Search for

in_CDReader.dll (cda)
in_flac.dll
in_midi.dll
in_mp3.dll
in_vorbis.dll (ogg)
in_wave.dll

and you'll find. That's how I got them too, but I haven't got the urls
handy right now. I have not tried in_midi.dll, but the others work OK
with 1by1.

Well, I just copied all my Winamp plugins to the 1X1 folder. Find
whatever plugins you'd like to use from here http://winamp.com/plugins/
and I'm assuming all you need to do is put them in the folder and you'll
be good to go.
