Nec 1300a - doesnt anybody read other threads?

Its one of the most popular ones - burns DUAL FORMAT plus and minus ,
so you dont have to buy only one type of DVD disk. And its 4x and its
cheap ! $111 last time I looked for an OEM that means NO SOFTWARE of
cables. Be sure to get the dual format - the single format NEC and
other makes are only slightly less.

The other cheap one thats popular is Optorite but it doesnt seem to be
as popular. Its slightly more and seems to have teeny more media
problems as far as I can tell but that changes all the time with
firmware upgrades. It also has a weird/cool implementation of SANYOs
1.4 gig burn capacity format on a regular CDR !! But people have
posted its picky - the type of media that can take that format.

I hope ALL cd burners adopt SANYOs additional 1.4 gig format for
current CDRs.

And of course theres Pioneer , which is a big favorite with some. A
while back Sony was the big name in dual format burners and then
Pioneer came along and they both have their boosters. I think NECs
are very fine and much much cheaper though the cheapest Sony and
Pioneer deals are coming down a fair amount too.

IF you want to spend more theres the ever popular SONY and Plextor
etc. They can a fair amount more to wway way more. Plextor has an 8x
DVD+R speed its over $200 though.

THere are also cheaper generic type makes starting to flood the market
- BTC sold under various names - rebranders like Cendyne which went
bankrupt , IO magic, stuff like that . You know companies that just
buy from manufacturers and put their names on it. I think Id rather
get a NEC instead since they are close in price and often they sell
for much more unless rebated. But you may get a good deal if its
rebated a lot and comes with software you like. .

Copying ?

Nope but you need special software not the stuff that comes with the
drive. DVDXCOPY , DVDpress, DVDshrink, etc.

Sony DRU-510A - faster than the NEC burnwise, but slower reading (but that
doesn't concern me). The best dual drive out there at the moment.

LG GSA4040B

What about this LG?

Dont really see a reason to buy it with other better known brands
going for cheap. I dont see any thing wrong with it from the reviews
by consumers but it doesnt seem to be particularly all that popular.
The reviews say the software sucks so plan on adding the cost of new
software.

It has the novetly of doing DVD-ram too which has zero appeal to many
I imagine. But if you want this other format I guess it could be the
drive for you.

If there some special deal on them like down to $80 Its a good deal I
guess.

awesome drive. I have it, and I haven't had *any* problems with it. I
wouldn't trade it for anything
