A friends computer got hit with power surge from lightening.
I pulled the hard drive and put it in my system and the drive
is good. However, they have password protected users and
I can't pull the data from those users. They are happy to give
me the password, but I still can't open the user folders and have
no chance to enter a password.

This has surely happened many times to you guys. How do I
get the chance to enter the password and thereby get the info.

I am going to have to move the data to a different computer for
my friend since the mobo on this one is fried. Hence the need
to open the user folders.

thanks,
Millie

Could you move the drive and do a repair install instead ?

If the idea of a repair installation (in the "different computer" ) as Paul
suggests is not applicable, try to "take ownership", ie. change permissions
on the user directories....
(assuming WinXP)

Try using a live distro of Linux; mount the hd; move the data to a clean
hd or memory stick or network folder or other. That way, you completely
bypass the issue of password protection altogether.
