BestBuy is having a sale on Western Digital WD1200JBRTL HDs. $50 after
rebate. Are these good drives? It seems unusually reasonable and I'm not
sure how ethical BestBuy is. TIA.

Generally speaking if it comes in a box with the manufacturer's seals from
Best Buy it's what the manufacturer sent them. If it's been resealed then
it's possible that either a customer or a store employee stole the original
contents.

As to the quality of the drives, nothing wrong with them that I've heard of.
Note that Circuit City is offering the same deal. But you might do better
to go down to Staples and pick up a 250 gig Maxtor for $130.

I dont like them myself, they can develop
a very unpleasant bearing whine.

How many of them have you owned? My WDJB has no bearing whine after
three years of usage.

Yeah, one drive did and the other didnt.

Fortunately the one that did isnt personally mine.

Its damned irritating whenever I have to work
on it tho, which is fortunately quite rarely.

I wouldnt tolerate it myself, surprisingly loud.
