For a college student, very light duty. She'll use our laser for most black
and white.

HP or Epson? I think HP in general are easier to use but I love the prints
from my Epson 2200.

My college son tossed his Epson in the trash. It was one of those The
college forced it upon us type of deals. All the kids used theirs until the
ink ran out and decided they were burdened with enough loans.

Good point. Better to buy a Brother HL 2040 laser (we love these) for $99
and a HP scanner (model?) for $45.

Watch out for the very low cartridge yields of the lowest end units. For
the HP printers see http://www.hp.com/pageyield/us/en/ for comparisons. For
very light usage even an entry HP may be a better choice as there is a
servicing overhead for printers with fixed printheads that are more of a
penalty for light usage. See
http://www.hp.com/pageyield/articles/us/en/EfficiencyArticle.html,
especially the chart in the middle of that article.

HP currently has some rebates, you might look at the Officejet 5610 for
example. It supports cartridges that are a step (color) or two (black)
above the smallest offered. Currently after rebate it is $119, see

I have to agree with Bob. Printer manufacturers (including those making
all-in-one models), need to get a return on the cost of the printer, and
that usually means doing so by making the ink very costly to remove when
the ink runs out, and it will do so soon after buying
the printer, I'm afraid.

Middle price models are usually the best compromise in terms of printer
capacity on a replacing the consumable inks.
