We know the drive works, because you used your CDROM drive to install
from the Windows CD.

Have you installed CD burner software or other related products ?

Sometimes a third party application will gum up the works. (InCD?)

In Device Manager, my optical drive is under the DVD/CDROM drive entry.
If I click on the drive name, and check the driver details, the
drivers used are "cdrom.sys", "redbook.sys", and "storprop.dll".
My drive is a simple CDROM. What drivers are shown for yours ?

It is bound to be some other program you've installed.

Try another CD/DVD drive.

I did install fron the drive, it will only read a microsoft cd-rom, or a
game cd-rom, nothing else and its a combo drive( internal ) and a dvd burner(
external ) they worked before i had a system crash and had to restore the
system then they went from working to only reading the types of disc i
mentioned before. If the disc is a cdr or dvd they won't read. got any ideas?

The fastest way of diagnosing such problems is still by process
of elimination: Either try a different CD/DVD drive or else test
your own CD/DVD drive in a different computer.

Ok went to the device manager and looked my drivers are the same as yours
except that i have one extra imapi.sys on both drives. What is that for?

Mhm, well. You must be a talented hacker. You write "..are the
same as yours". You're the first person who has managed to
hack into my system. How did you do it?

I still think that your drive is marginal. Doing the tests I suggested
would confirm it.

I believe he was referring to his drivers being the same as the ones
"Paul" mentioned...

I see. He seems to be a little confused about the post he's replying to.

All right everybody i understand that things are a little scetchy but the
problem is i had a bad crash and had to recover my entire system I had to
restore using my restore disc when i finished restoreing i went in and
repaired windows with my windows disc everything was working fine until my
son downloaded wmp11 on to the computer thats when everything with my
internal and external drives happened. I rolled back to wmp10 and they
started working agian but over a period of about 2 weeks they have stopped
reading dvds and cdrs of any type they will read the windows xp disc and the
restore disc and some types of cd-rom game discs (civ 3)-(age of empires) but
nothing else. Now you know the root cause i hope you can direct me were i
need to go or do to get the problem fixed.

easy i pay attention in class. No i was refering to pauls answer that he had
given and mistakenly added my answer to your reply. I have a one thing to ask
you that is very important. How can i do a clean install when the install
program will not let me delete the old os and install a new one.

While we compose our thoughts, there is a thread here with some suggestions.

http://www.siliconguide.com/qa/forum/messages/88-1.shtml

For clearing upper and lower filter entries, there is this tool.
It is based on CDgone.reg .

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs

This is the content of CDgone, and the minus signs in this, presumably means
to remove registry entries.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K]

-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k]

The other thing mentioned in that thread, is a package from Nero.

ftp://ftp9.nero.com/attach/cleanpack.zip

Driver-CleanTool.exe and RegistryChecker.exe are the contents.
Instructions are here, and elsewhere. I tried both tools - the
first tool presented a dialog (but it found no objectionable
drivers on this machine, because I have no burners on this machine).
The second tool didn't even have the decency to display anything
on the screen, so I don't know what it did.
