Here is the thing......I read on Microsoft's webpage that you don't need to
run your computer using administrator because of the damage that trojans and
other things can do......but my computer is not allowing access to the
internet on any account other that my administrator account. I have contacted
my isp (which is my phone company---using dial up), I have contacted my
computer tech support, NO ONE WANTS TO CLAIM THEY'RE RESPONSIBLE, and asked
on here, and searched microsoft's website.... I do not know what else to do.
Can anyone help me? I just got this computer Dec 10, 2005.
PLEASE...anyone??????

Welcome to the right place to ask. any minute now you will have MVPs turning
up like buses with better answers, but until then try running the internet
connection wizard on your new account, enter the same details as you entered
when you set up your internet connection before.

If you cant do that, cheat, give your new account admin permissions while
you set up the connection then put permissions back and try to connect. (you
may need to logoff an on again)

Good Luck,
Martin

Not quite sure what is being asked but the problems and setup
are at the computer's end and not the ISP.

If one desires not to use the Administrator's logon, and this
is perfectly fine, create an individual user account with the
requisite privileges, e.g., limited, power, administrator, etc.,
to access the internet.

And for protection of the computer, make sure that it is running
behind a 2-way firewall, e.g., ZoneAlarm, and a anti-virus app
with current definitions. They should be installed for to cover
all users at all privlege levels.

Have you set up your dial-up account on the Limited User?
On the Administrator account did you tell Windows to make the account
available to all users?

I have tried using limited accounts, guest accounts, and even assigning
another administrator account. I tried to be sure the internet is installed
on each individual account..I get the error message
"C:/Program/Files/CenturyTelUNWISE.EXE could not be opened.....Access is
denied" The other error message when I am logged in a different account and
try to connect to the internet says "Connection Time could not be detected.
Error 1. Contact your ISP" The computer company tech had me check to share
and allow all users. She didn't know what else to do. Microsoft says
because the software was on the comp when I bought it then it is the
computer's responsibility. The isp says it is the computer's people's fault.
The other suggestion was to do a system recovery and setup all over again.

I have these notes from MVP Kelly Theriot to solve the "Limited users
can't get online" issue. The notes are rough (and I'm not sure where on
her website I got them or if she posted them in a newsgroup post ages
ago). This will require you going into your Registry, which can be
dangerous. If you make a mistake you can hose your Windows installation
and Registry changes are immediate. You should export any Registry keys
you are changing first and be very, very careful. If you are uneasy
about doing any of the stuff below, DON'T. Call a professional computer
repair person and have them come on-site to troubleshoot your issue.

Here is Kelly's website and you may want to explore there first:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm

Please note that since Kelly apparently thought some of this could be
caused by malware, make sure your computer is completely clean:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

To start the Registry Editor, go to Start>Run>regedit [enter]
***
Registry settings to check from Kelly Theriot for the problem that
limited users can't get online. Seems to be connected with malware, but
check these entries:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings]

ProxyEnable set to 0
ProxyServer verify that the IP:Port is valid

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\ControlPanel]

Connection Settings
Connwiz Admin Lock

Set either both to 0 or delete.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

NoInternetOpenWith
NoWebServices

Set either both to 0 or delete.

Note: NoPublishingWizard and NoOnlinePrintsWizard could also be listed

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\InternetManagement]

RestrictCommunication

Set to 0 or delete
***

Again, if you don't understand the above or are nervous about working in
the Registry - DON'T. You have been warned.

CenturyTelUNWISE.EXE
CenturyTel is your ISP?
and they won't help?

reinstall their software. see if that helps. maybe under each user account!!

That is correct. I purchased the computer mainly because I wanted windows
xp, and I cannot believe that Microsoft won't help me either. Is this really
that unusual and that difficult to fix? I am ready to return this computer
to the store. I have used Windows 98 for years and never had any trouble.
Can anyone help me or suggest who can?????????????? I am really frustrated
about it. Thank you to all who have posted.

Why are you not using XP's built-in dial-up networking?
Unless Microsoft is familiar with the software you're using under
Windows, they would be hard pressed to know what the problem is.

If you log on as administrator and click Start | Connect To | <your account>
does it connect automatically or do you get a popup where you have to click
Dial?

If that popup appears, click in the circle for "Anyone who uses this
computer".
