This should be a simple fix and it sounds really dumb, but I'm not very good
with computers. I have Vista Premium and while trying to open a doc
attatchment in my email a few days ago, I allowed the text to be opened with
another file or method......so now all my emails that have doc attatchments
do not open with ordinary text but with weird looking shapes and
gobeldygook. Some other kind of computer language I assume but I need to
know how to return it to english text. Please help!!
And thanks ahead of time.

Melinda ... sounds like you may have an 'association' problem ... file
types, such as .doc or .jpg, are associated with a particular executable
program, .exe. You can change the executable program that opens a particular
file type by trying the following:

Select one of the .doc attachment files ... right-click on it to bring up
the context menu ... you should see a choice that says 'Open With' ... click
on that and a box should come up with at least a few choices of .exe
programs that can open the .doc file type. Select one.

Ideally, you would have WinWord.exe ... or whatever the actual executable
file name for Microsoft Word is these days. If you don't have that, I
usually try the word processing app in Microsoft Works ... or the simple
WordPad program, which is WordPad.exe; that one can read Rich Text Format
(.rtf), which enables it to do a pretty good job on .doc files. It may not
show the actual executable filename ... it may say just WordPad.

Don't know if this will set the executable you select to be the new default
program for opening files of the .doc type. If the one you pick works for
you, but reverts to gobbledygook tomorrow, let us know. If the one you pick
still does gobbledygook, pick another one, and so forth.

Good luck ... vanilla ...

Do you have Microsoft Word? You need to change the file association
for .DOC back to Word. One way would be to do a repair install of
Word. Another way: Control Panel, Default Programs.

My previous post was full of it. I don't know why I thought WordPad could
open .doc files. Nothing but gobbledygook. Very Sorry ... vanilla ...
