i am on IE7/xp and this was the response from MS when someone asked if they
could get hotmail in the drop down:
and it worked.
is there a similar solution for gmail?? like GMMAPI.DLL???

because i do not use outlook, nor do i want to...my chosen mail system is
gmail...and all i want is to be able to have my platform drop me at the gmail
logon screen when i am on a site that allows me to contact them. it worked
for compuserve and they have a fix for hotmail so i am not asking for so
much, i think...

Well, consider this: Outlook, for example, is a program you install on
your computer, while Gmail is a website. That's a difference that may
not seem important to you but it actually is significant. Another thing
to consider is that Internet Explorer and Gmail are owned by two
completely separate organizations.

Windows Live Hotmail, formerly known as MSN Hotmail and commonly
referred to simply as Hotmail, is a free webmail service of the Windows
Live brand (i.e., a website) provided by Microsoft, the same company
that created Internet Explorer.

Gmail was created by Google, a completely separate company unrelated to
Microsoft.

Still trying to keep from using a true email client, eh?
(Posting multiple times in the same newsgroups...)

Well - ironically - if you had used the built-in help system for your email
server of choice (or the search engine that is the base of the business
running your email-of-choice server) - you might have found this:

About the Gmail Notifier
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=9429
(States, "Once you install the Notifier, you'll be able to Make Gmail your
default email application.")

And further, this:

Making Gmail your default mail application
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=10966

Using Firefox 3.x.x?
http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/power-tip-set-gmail-as-your-default.html

Using a search engine (GMail's namesake in fact - Google), you might have
stumbled on this:
http://lifehacker.com/397957/gattach-fully-integrates-gmail-into-the-windows-desktop
(Specifically: http://www.gattach.net/index.html )

In other words - as I see it - utilizing the tools available to you per your
choice of email server, you should have been able to find all of the above.

Bear in mind that you can use gmail, but still use Outlook, Outlook
Express, or any other E-mail client with it. Using gmail via its web
site is not necessary, and in my view is a far clumsier, slower way to
read and send E-mail. There are instructions for how to set up gmail
with your chosen E-mail client on the web site.

I think that having web access to your E-mail is good and lets you get
your mail when you are traveling and need to use a public computer,
but it's the worst way to do it at home on your own computer.
Fortunately gmail lets you do both.
