Global catalogue not being recognised

I have 2 W2K DCs, one of which runs exchange 2K. They are both GCs, but when
the one running exchange is down, the other reports no available logon
servers and MAPI logons are not serviced until the other comes back on line.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

GJB,

Maybe I misread something, but if you have the two DCs, of which both are
GCs, and the one running the Exchange Server goes down then your MAPI
clients would have a problem logging on. I assume that you are using
Outlook 2000 or Outlook XP?

A quick question: when you made the second DC a Global Catalog Server, did
you reboot it? Or have you rebooted it at all since the time that you made
that DC a GC? This is necessary for MAPI clients to recognize that DC as an
additional GC. However, again, with the DC that is running Exchange down
your MAPI clients will not be able to connect ( read: open Outlook ).

Please correct me if I am misreading this post / misunderstanding this post.

Cary,

Sorry I should have said that MAPI clients with mailboxes on other Exchange
member servers cannot log on as they appear to not authenticate against the
remaining GC/DC.

The second GC server has been rebooted and I have run LDP queries and
another utility to check that it is a GC.

Thanks,

G

GJB,

Okay. I should have figured that out! Or at least asked about it. Just to
confirm, the 'MAPI' clients are Outlook 2000 or Outlook XP? The reason I
ask is because something in the back of my mind is telling me that this
could be a dsproxy issue. Outlook XP handles this a whole lot better than
Outlook 2000.

Cary
