Global Catalog Server

My understanding of making a Windows 2000 DC a Global
Catalog Server is so that is can be used to authenticate
users. Is this true? Is there anything else that making a
DC a GCS does? Also, is it ok to have more than one GCS in
a domain. Currently we have about 4 sites, all one domain
and I have a DC set up as a GCS at each site. Is this a
good practice?

Take a look at these.
This link will explain the GC better that I.

Extract from Q296882 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296882 :

A global catalog server performs two key functions in Microsoft Windows 2000
domains:
- When a user logs on to the network, the global catalog server
provides universal group membership information for the account that
sends the logon request to the domain controller.
- The global catalog server lets a member of the domain find Active
Directory directory service information regardless of the domain in the
forest that contains the data.

If a global catalog is not available when a user initiates a network logon
process, the user can log on only to the local computer.

There must be at least one global catalog server per site so that users can
log on and locate Active Directory resources.

If there is only one domain controller in the domain, the domain controller
and the global catalog server are the same. If there is more than one domain
controller in the domain, the domain controller that is configured as such
hosts the global catalog.

Jeff,

There are several articles floating around including one a few months ago in
Windows magazine talking about what happens when a user logs on and the GC
is part of this.

Depending of your lines speeds between the sites, having a GC at each site
should be good.

If you have a single domain forest I recommend that you make all DCs GC.
Since there are no phantoms the IM have nothing to do so it's ok to make it
a GC.

I hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question, but what happens i
your global catalog server crashes? Does another dc automaticall
assume the role of GCS? Thanks.

Ken

No, you must manually set the GC role.
You do that in Sites and Services.
