Inspired by this which costs almost £20.00 plus postage, I thought I'd be dead clever.

So I went to the local glass shop and had a piece of smoked gray safety glass made, 300mm x 230mm and had all the edges rounded and and the corners rounded. Cost me £6.00. Stuck a set of rubber feet on it that cost 60p and it was finished, nice and heavy, about 5mm thick, great polished surface.

And guess what - none of me laser mice work on it

Made a bit of a cockup there eh? ;)

I guess it would be great for ball mice, but I ain't got any of those....

Ho hum :D

That sounds exactly like something I would do!

Got a photo of it? :)

Perhaps spraypainting the back would do the trick and give it something to bounce up from? Or keep it as a funny April Fools day present ;)

Haven't got a photo of it, I'll put one up before the weekend's out.

I tried putting different coloured mouse mats underneath to give some colour to reflect from, but that didn't work.

I'm wondering if the sheet of plastic laminate affects things but it's probably just too shiny, I'm guessing.

Thats a shame :( You could try giving it a frosted top using wet and dry paper, but that might turn out messy.

Huh unlucky Flopp's on your little venture...:D

Maybe Ians idea is workable and frosting the top may give it something for the laser to bounce back off from...Failing that a thin rubber layer stuck to it should do the trick...

Top marks for trying to save yourself a few beans, Just don't lose your Marbles..

I've tried the Icemats, Steelpads and a bunch of others and the only pads i have found that work well, are accurate and smooth with the G7 are the 'gaming' cloth ones. :)

At the mo am using the Everglide Titan Gaming pad. Did have a Qpad (In Black) before that, but the feet on the G7 left a shiny 'sheen' on the mat after a while, and that stopped the pad going into standby and the monitor from turning off. So i got me the Titan. Been awesome ever since. :thumb:

yep, tried using a mouse on my coffee table and couldn't get it to do bugger all

think the problem could be to do with refraction ??? its the only thing i can think of

if you were to put a coulored film on the top i reckon it would work but it would probably need to be opaque

well i could have told you that :D

shaddap :p

;)

Ooh, ooh, I like the wet and dry idea, that may work :)

I have some wet and dry paper, I shall give that a go over the weekend.

The glass shop may be able to frost the piece with a sort of a mini shot blaster .

Thank gawd for that. To be called Bill gates must be the ultimate insult :)

It roughly translates as: 'I've ripped of everybody else's ideas, made them work, held the whole world's corporate infrastructure to ransom, vastly overpriced everything because I can, have never admitted to my product being the most flawed OS on this planet but I don't care cos I'm coining it, me and my lovely wife are now even richer than all the Arab Sheiks combined and to justify this elevated position from our mansion we'll dedicate a few hundred thousand dollars to African children just to make us look good.

'Our very expensive PR agent assures me that the whole world loves us, so all is good eh?'

Well, what would you do with all that moolah flops? ;)

ps nice idea with the glass mousemats. Pity it turned out like the chocolate teapot ;)

That wet an dry ain't going to work around here , not unless you know something the weather man dosn't

:D
And yet 95% of us are using it for work and play :p

Aye, and therein lies the rub :(

You wanna know why? It's simple - Windows is easy to use and MS have twisted everybody's arm to make their product work with Windows and not vice versa, as it once was in DOS days.

However, Linux is catching up very very fast.

If you equipped a workforce with a networked Linux system where all they had to do was use the Office applications - it would work, because at that level most Linux Distros (with the exception Of Slackware and a few others, I believe) are actually very very easy to use out the box.

It's only when you have to enter the Konsole and issue command prompt instructions where it can get a bit complicated if you don't know what you're doing.

However, as I said, the GUI of most Linux Distros straight out of the box is now very very easy to use.

If all you want to do is graphics (Gimp); office (Open Office); media (DVD and audio playback, burning and editing) and internet, Linux will do you, easily.

The main area where Linux falls flat is Gaming, unfortunately, cos Games developers actually make most of their money porting to consoles, even the poor old Windows PC gets overlooked a little, so Linux with it's comparitively small market, doesn't stand a chance.

There are a few developers, like Atari (UT2004) who have made their games work in Linux, so fair play to those guys :)

Er... going back to mousemats for a minute, Sir Floppicus, I use Logitech MX1000 Laser mice and have a super fast whizzy surface for them. It's called .... wait for it, I promise I'm not pulling your leg here ..."Magic non-stick liner" which is intended for baking/frying things really. If you want to take a look it can be found here

There is also a thicker version in black, from the same company, called "Magic oven liner" which you can click to from the same page above. I use the first one and the mice really skate over it beautifully and it really is tough stuff, so is unlikely to wear out (even in kitchen use it lasts for years and years.) Everything else seems to "drag" by comparison, so just thought I'd mention it.... :D

Taffycat, that link is superb

I think I'll get some of that oven liner and cut it to shape to fit the glass. If there's enough left I can also line the bottom of my oven with it :D

And I may even try the Magic Non Stick Liner for £4.50. I shall report back.

You may very well have started a craze here, lol, I can just see this 'mod' spreading like wildfire across the Gaming community and putting mousemat manufacturer's out of business

Great stuff :thumb:

 Better warn Lakeland to buy-in more stock :p It'll be interesting to hear what you think when you've given it a go :thumb:
