glacial (!!!) local disks in Remote Desktop

I am running an XP-Pro host and 2 different XP-Pro clients, and the
'local disk drives' option.

The local disk(s) show up but Windows explorer takes 3:27 (that's 3.5
minutes!!!) to open a local sub-folder for viewing. Folders on the
host seem to open fine. It does not matter whether I am running thru
ADSL on each side or on the host's LAN.

host:
XP-Pro (Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633)
NTSF
Norton AV-2002 (8.07.17C Dell OEM)

client1:
XP-Pro (Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633)
Fat32
Norton AV-2002 (8.07.17C)

client2:
XP-Pro (Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633)
NTFS
Norton AV-2004 (10.0.1.13)

Disabling Auto-protect on the host and on the client doesn't seem to
make any difference.

HELP!!??!!

By chance, how fast is the connection with just normal Remote Desktop
usage?

3:27 is bad, but I have seen similar times when I try connecting to a
machine with a high load (background tasks) or limited memory...

The connection is fine. It's Windows Explorer trying to access the
'local disks'.
When I click on a folder located on the host, it opens just fine.
When I click on a folder located back on my local disk, molasses!!
When I try to copy a file from host to client; 37 min for a 70Mb file.

If I connect without 'local disks', everything is OK.
If I connect with 'local disks', everything except the local disks is
fine.

These results obtain whether I am connecting thru ADSL-Internet-ADSL,
or am on the host's LAN with only a 10/100 switch between host and
client.

Further info:

The host is a P4 1.8GHz/768Mb RAM on a Novell 4.11 domain with 7
workstations

The #1 client is a P3 847MHz/384Mb RAM either as a workstation on the
host's LAN or on a peer-to-peer workgroup connecting in thru
ADSL-internet-ADSL

The #2 client is a P4 2.4GHz/512Mb RAM on the peer-to-peer workgroup

My tests have been run with most of the other workstations shut down
and effectively no other activity on either side.
