I bought a new a computer that has a gigabyte lan on it, but my switch is
10/100. should they work together. or get a gigabyte switch?

Dlink better than Linksys for a switch?

The gigabit NIC will work at 100 Mb/sec with the switch. You don't need a faster switch unless you have other devices that also work at gigabit speed. Linksys is better that D-Link.

They will work, but of course you'd need the gigabyte switch
and other device with gigabit adapter to get best LAN
speeds. For internet access it would not matter, even 10Mb
is enough for *most* internet service.

The differences are trivial, practically any major brand
switch should do fine. With routers there are a few more
features/options and design differences so some will prefer
a certain brand of router (but for the most part, most of
those work well enough too).
