We use a scheduled task to restart a Windows 2000 Server
with Service Pack 3. This server has an Intel Pro/1000
network adapter with fiber connection. It is connected to
a Cisco 4912G Switch.
The problem we are having is when the server restarts via
the scheduled task it does not see the network when the
server comes back up. There are four methods for
establishing connectivity.
1. Unplug the fiber cable from the back of the server and
plug it back in.
2. Restart the server from the console.
3. The WAN adminstrator can disable the port on the switch
the enable the port.
4. Disable the Nic through Windows 2000, the enable it.
Any of these three options works almost every time. The
problem exist with 3 different brand names of Gigabit
adapters. The problem effects serveral of our servers,
with very few exceptions it is impossible to anticipate
when a server is going to have this problem.
This has been a problem for sometime, we have tried
different Cisco switches, different adapters, and the
problem exist on Dell PowerEdge servers & Compaq Proliant
servers.
Let me know if you need any further information or if this
is the wrong forum for this question.
Thanks
